Rowan's Birth Story

At 37 weeks, my doctor started to check my progression toward delivery, I was dilated to a 2 and 50% effaced. This was good news because not only had I been anxiously awaiting the arrival of my sweet baby girl, my sister in law is getting married on November 20th (just 10 days after my original due date) and of course I want to be in attendance and feeling good for their special day. I had told Dr. Terry of their plans to be married and he said he would be willing to help me out if my body was showing signs of progression.

My 38 week appointment fell on all Halloween and at this point I was now dilated to a 2 and 70% effaced. My doctor decided, since the wedding was coming up and because I had been having so many painful contractions, he would strip my membranes and hope to see me back in labor on Saturday. He told me that if I didn't go into labor that I could come back to his office on Tuesday and we would try it again. I spent the entire evening having very painful yet inconsistent contractions that weren't leading to labor. I woke up feeling very disappointed on Saturday morning, I was so eager to hold my baby but she wasn't ready to come and I had to accept that.

I went back to the doctor on Tuesday November 4th and was dilated to a 3+.  The doctor decided that he would try to strip my membranes again and hope that it would put me into real labor this time. He also spent some time staring quietly at my chart, I just sat there wondering if he was in a day dream or what? ha ha. Finally he said, "Ah ha! You have ITP and even though it's not acting up, it's still a reason to be induced. Let me go call labor and delivery." He came back a few minutes later and asked, "Is tomorrow a good day to have a baby?" Of course I immediately exclaimed, "YES!" He proceeded to tell me that he would strip my membranes and hope she would come that night but if she didn't he had put me on the schedule to be induced in the morning.

After my appointment I immediately called my husband and our parents to tell them the news--I was so excited! I spent the afternoon running around town finishing up all of my last minute errands that needed to be done before I could have a baby.

The next morning the hospital called at 6 asking if we could be there by 7 to get started. I jumped right out of bed, I was going to have a baby today! We arrived to the hospital and the nurse checked us into our room where I changed into a lovely blue gown and they set me up to all sorts of monitors and IVs. The nurse checked me to see how I was measuring and I was still at a 3+. At about 8 AM they started my IV with pitocin to get my contractions going. The doctor came in about 30 minutes later to check me as well, I had already progressed to a 5! He broke my water and told me I would probably want to get my epidural soon. I felt ok at the time but agreed to have the anesthesiologist come whenever he was free. It happened that he was going to be with another patient for another 30 minutes. I thought that was ok but the contractions grew very strong and fast! Within 20 minutes I was practically in tears and clenching the bed with all my might. The anesthesiologist came just in time! He had me curl up into a ball to give me an epidural and life was good after that. Mckay, my mom, Madi (sister) and Melinda (mother-in-law) sat around chatting until about 11 AM when the nurse came into check me again. I had progressed to 7 centimeters. Mac, his mom and my sister decided they had better go get lunch before things progressed too much further. My mom and I were sitting in the room when about 20 minutes later i felt a really strong urge to go to the bathroom. I told my mom and she paged my nurse. Turns out that I had progressed to a 10 in just 20 minutes. My mom called my husband and told them that they'd better hurry back!

Once they returned back from lunch, the nurse had me start pushing. She held one leg and Mckay was on the other for about an hour until she declared it was time to have a baby! Dr. Terry suited up and at 1:43 PM my sweet baby girl was born. They placed her on my chest and I just couldn't believe what I was seeing, she was perfect. Mckay cut the umbilical cord and they all followed the baby over to be cleaned up, weighed and measured while the doctor continued to fix me up. Rowan Kay Snow weighed 7lbs 4 oz and was 20 inches long. They brought my baby girl back to my chest and we, along with Mckay, shared one of the single greatest moments of my life. I am so grateful we had such a smooth delivery and even more grateful for a healthy baby girl. Rowan is the sweetest baby I have ever met and she never cries! I don't know how we got so lucky but I am sure grateful to be her Mama! We love you baby Rowe Rowe. xoxo.
